The Malaysian national news agency Bernama reports that a Personal Data Protection Bill, aimed at safeguarding the confidentiality of personal data and preventing misuse of the data by any irresponsible party, will be tabled at the forthcoming sitting of the Dewan Rakyat, the lower legislative chamber.

According to Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim (left), the government has received many complaints on the misuse of personal data of individuals which prevented them benefiting or getting their rights from various programmes. The proposed legislation is of limited application though, being aimed only at the private sector.
