ITS … intelligent transport systems for the EU

Jeremy Phillips

Last Friday’s online Official Journal of the European Union published the splendidly named ‘Opinion of the European Data Protection Supervisor on the Communication from the Commission on an Action Plan for the Deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems in Europe and the accompanying proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council laying down the framework for the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems in the field of road transport and for interfaces with other transport modes’. While welcoming the proposals for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), the EDPS has made a number of proposals of his own for making ITS more data protection-friendly, encouraging the adoption of principles of data minimisation wherever possible and clarifying the proposals so as to remove scope for uncertainties and ambiguities.
