Data protection legislation: more symbolic than real?

Just published, in the current issue of the International Journal of Law and Information Technology (IJLIT, published by Oxford University Press), is an article by Dr Dag Wiese Schartum (right), “Designing and Formulating Data Protection Laws”. The author, a Professor and head of the Section for Information Technology and Administrative Systems (SITAS) at the University of Oslo, concludes that “there is the possibility that data protection law do not work as we expect” and that there is a “danger that lofty data protection laws become more symbols than reality”.
